History Of McCauley

With the introduction of streetcar lines, McCauley was established as a community in Edmonton’s core in 1935. However, these lands have long been home to Treaty 6 First Nations, with Indigenous people gathering here for thousands of years.

Over the years, McCauley has flourished, welcoming families from diverse ethnic backgrounds, each contributing to the rich cultural tapestry and vibrant history of the neighbourhood.

In December 2020, McCauley and its surrounding neighborhoods were gifted a new Indigenous ward name, O-day’min.“Strawberry is O-day’min in the Anishinaabe language. Before Edmonton became a large city, it was a gathering place for many Indigenous nations. This name symbolizes the heart of Edmonton,
Amiskwaciwâskahikan (ah-miss-kwa-TSEE-was-kai-gan).” -Elder Theresa Strawberry & Elders Helper Arlene Twin
.

In Cree, “O-day” means “heart berry”, signifying McCauley as the heart of the city.
